What do you do when the world is literally falling apart around you? The problems, largely ignored, that only began to occur in The Well of Ascension have now had a year to develop since Vin released the power at the Well. The mists are coming during the day: killing some, sickening others, and blocking the light needed for the plants. Earthquakes are becoming more and more common, as well as volcanic eruptions. Heavy ashfalls choke the air and bury the land. And all Vin, Elend, and the others have to rely on is a series of clues left by the Lord Ruler.
The Hero of Ages is masterfully written, just like the two books that preceded it. However, be prepared, as the plot gets significantly deeper and it becomes a little harder to follow exactly what is going on in the war between Ruin and Preservation. Fortunately, the running commentary that starts each chapter will help to explain a lot. Still, not every question is answered by the end.
As a side note, the level of gore and language is comparable to the rest of the trilogy.
Characters: You will still love them, and your heart will break for some of them. The banter from The Final Empire does not return, and I still missed it, but it is easy to see how the characters have grown and changed as they face their third impossible task. And, to top it all off, we find out that the Lord Ruler may not have been as bad of a guy as we thought he was.
Be prepared for some twists and things that have been mentioned, but hitherto unnoticed, since the trilogy's beginning to suddenly become important. This is, after all, Brandon Sanderson.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.
